Pace Quiets Bentley Bats, 7-0, in NE10 Championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior right-hander Patrick Gleason (Valhalla, N.Y.) pitched a one-hitter and junior third baseman Anthony Labita (North Massapequa, N.Y.) hit a three-run homer as Pace University downed Bentley University, 7-0, during the first day of the Northeast Championship Weekend at Le Moyne College's Dick Rockwell Field Thursday.

On Tuesday, Bentley defeated Southern New Hampshire and NE10 Northwest Division Pitcher of the Year Jeffrey Praml, 7-4. The Falcons didn't have the same fortune with Gleason, the Southwest Division Pitcher of the Year.

Gleason struck out nine while earning her eighth win of the season. The only hit he allowed came in the third, a single up the middle by graduate second baseman Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS). He eventually reached third but was stranded there.

Despite just the one hit, Bentley had nine baserunners with Gleason walking five and hitting two Falcons.

Pace jumped in front in the fourth when sophomore shortstop Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J.) walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single down the left field line by sophomore catcher Hunter Goldstein (Jericho, N.Y.).

The third-seeded Setters (31-18) added two runs in the fifth. Graduate designated player Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in one run with a double down the right field line and he scored on a single up the middle by graduate right fielder Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J.).

Pace broke the game open in the eighth, scoring four times. Sophomore center fielder Josh Miller (Clifton, N.J.) had an RBI double to left and Labita followed with his three-run homer.

Miller and McCabe each had two hits for Pace, which will play Le Moyne in a winner's bracket game on Friday.

Freshman right-hander Pat Heber (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS), who picked up the save in Tuesday's win, pitched the first six innings for Bentley and was charged with the loss. He allowed six hits and three runs while striking out four.

Bentley, 23-21, will take on Franklin Pierce Friday at 10 am in an elimination game. The Ravens were also blanked in Thursday's opening game, 8-0 by Le Moyne.
