Three Falcons Homer as Bentley Sweeps Saint Anselm, 2-1 and 18-5

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior DH Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS), graduate first baseman Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) and senior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) all homered as Bentley University swept a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader from Saint Anselm College, 2-1 and 18-5 Friday at Sullivan Park.

With the sweep, Bentley extended its winning streak to four, climbed over .500 to 19-18 and extended its lead over Saint Anselm for the final playoff slot in the NE10 Northeast Division to two games.

In the opener, Saint Anselm took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Junior left fielder Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) singled to center, stole second and scored on a two-out single to left center by senior catcher Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.).

It stayed 1-0 Hawks until the fifth when Rizzuto singled to left and scored on Beauregard's home run to left, his sixth of the season. It was his second game winner in as many days as his two-run blast on Thursday lifted Bentley to  a 9-8 win in the opener of the four-game series.

Graduate right-hander Brandon Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) pitched the first six innings and won for the fourth time in six decisions. Freshman Matt Fernandez (Needham, Mass./Needham HS) came on for the seventh and earned the safe. Ostiguy allowed four hits and struck out nine and Fernandez survived two walks for his second save.

Bentley managed only five hits off junior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.), including two from sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS).

The bats exploded the game two with the Falcons finishing with 18 hits with both Sears and Rizzuto having four hits, a double, a homer and four runs scored. Rizzuto finished with five RBI and Sears, who extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 22, had two.

The Falcons scored in six of the seven innings, including seven in the seventh. That was the third time in four games they've scored at least seven in an inning.

The heart of the Falcon lineup, including Sears and Rizzuto, combined for 12 hits, ten RBI and 11 runs scored. DeMartinis III was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and senior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS) finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

Freshman lefty Pat Heber (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS) earned the win with eight strikeouts in his five innings of work. He gave up four runs in the first but blanked the Hawks (10-31, 6-13 NE10) over his final four innings.

The two teams will wrap up their series Saturday with first pitch moved up to 10:30 am due to the expected rain.
