Bentley Takes Game 1 from AIC, 10-2; Game 2 Goes to the Yellow Jackets in 9

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate DH Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) had three hits and three runs scored, senior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) picked up three RBI and graduate right-hander Brandon Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) struck out eight as Bentley University captured game one of its Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against American International College, 10-2 on DeFelice Field Friday.

In game two, which was scheduled for seven innings, AIC erupted for four runs in the ninth inning to gain an 8-4 victory.

With the split, Bentley left the field with records of 11-8 overall and 3-3 Northeast-10. AIC, 6-15 overall, picked up its first conference win in six attempts this season.

After giving up a run in the top of the first of the opener, Bentley took the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice. Sears singled to left, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Henry B. Platt HS). Bolton stole second and scored on a ground out by Beauregard.

Bentley added three runs in the third, making it a 5-1 game. Sears had an RBI double, sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS) had a sac fly and Beauregard plated Bolton with an RBI double.

The Falcons broke the game open with two in the seventh and three in the eighth making it a 10-1 game. Scoring in both innings was DeMartinis III, who was hit by a pitch in the seventh and walked in the eighth.

Bentley's offense featured Sears, who finished with two singles, a double and two walks in his five plate appearances. Bolton was the other Falcon with more than one hit as he finished two-for-four.

Ostiguy, who combined with two relievers for a five-hitter, allowed only three hits and one run in his six innings of work. The win was his third in four decisions this spring.

The AIC ninth saw nine batters to the plater with the visitors using four hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly to take control of the game. The big blow was a two-run, two-out single by sophomore catcher Joseph Lynch (Groveland/Pentucket Reg. HS) that drove in the seventh and eighth runs.

Bentley, which had trailed 3-0 after two-and-a-half, forged a tie with single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Senior infielder Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS) played a key role with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a line drive home run to left in the sixth.

Sears walked three times for Bentley as he reached base during his first eight plate appearances in the doubleheader. The Falcons also received four innings of shutout relief from freshman lefty Matt Fernandez (Needham/Needham HS). He allowed only two hits and struck out five.

The two teams will continue their four-game series with another doubleheader on DeFelice Field Sunday, starting at noon.
