Sears Leads Bentley to Doubleheader Sweep of St. Michael’s, 16-9 and 7-3

WESTWOOD, Mass. – Graduate left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) drove in seven runs with his five hits included two doubles and a home run as Bentley University swept St. Michael's College, 16-9 and 7-3, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Xaverian Brothers High School Sunday afternoon.

Sears was 2-for-4 with a double, sacrifice fly and four RBI in the opener and followed that effort with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, home run, three RBI and three runs scored in the nightcap, which was called due to darkness after seven innings.

The opener saw Bentley twice come from behind as the Falcons trailed 5-0 after two innings and 9-7 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Falcons put up three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-5 lead. The third included an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS), a sac fly by Sears and an RBI single by junior second baseman Tyler Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy). The fourth featured a two-run double to left by Sears.

After the Purple Knights (0-4) regained the lead with four in the seventh, Bentley erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the inning. That frame, which began with three straight walks, included a three-run double by senior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS), a two-run double by sophomore left fielder Rene Nunez (Secaucus, N.J./Bergen Catholic HS) and an RBI double by senior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS).

Bentley's 18-hit attack included four from Beauregard, three from Gonzalez and two apiece for Lindsay, Sears and graduate left fielder Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS).

Freshman Steve Hardiman (Massapequa N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) earned his second win of the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He scattered two hits and struck out three.

Sears, who was moved to the top of the order in game two, led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right. He walked, stole second and scored in a three-run third and had a two-run double to center in a three-run fifth.

Bentley received solid pitching from freshmen Pat Heber (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS) and George Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Henry B. Platt HS). Heber pitched five shutout innings before giving up three runs in the sixth and Bolton came in to get the game's final five outs.

Bentley, 5-1, will head to Florida later in the week to begin a seven-game trip on March 11.
