DeMartinis III Homer Gives Bentley 12-11 Game 1 Win; Falcons Take Game 2 to Complete Sweep

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.. – Sophomore shortstop Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS) broke an 11-11 deadlock with a sixth-inning home run to give Bentley University a wild 12-11 victory over Assumption University in game one of a non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Lake Brantley High School. The home run was the third in his first ten at bats as a Falcon.

DeMartinis III went deep again and graduate right-hander Brandon Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) pitched five shutout innings as Bentley completed the sweep with a 7-0 in game two.

In the seven-inning opener, Bentley went into the bottom of the fifth inning facing an 11-5 deficit. After the Assumption loaded the bases with three walks, back-to-back RBI singles by senior DH Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS) and junior second baseman Tyler Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy) each drove in a run. Senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) followed with a two-run double to left, making it 11-9.

The rally continued with a single to left by senior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) driving in Zupkus and Gonzalez to tie the game.

DeMartinis III, who homered twice in Friday's 13-8 win over Assumption, sent the second pitch of the bottom of the sixth over the left field fence for what proved to be the game winner.

Freshman lefty Steve Hardiman (Massapequa, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) pitched the final 1.2 innings to gain the win in his collegiate debut. He struck out three, including junior leftfielder Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) to end the game.

Assumption (1-5) homered six times in the loss, with both graduate shortstop Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Berardino hitting two.

Bentley's 12 hits included two apiece from graduate left fielder Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), Beauregard, Gonzalez and senior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS). DeMartinis III scored three times and Zupkus had three RBI.

In the nightcap, Beauregard and graduate DH Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) went back-to-back in the first for a 2-0 lead and DeMartinis III slugged a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 4-0.

The Falcons added three runs in the sixth, the big blow being a two-run double by sophomore catcher Patrick Purcell (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central HS).

Ostiguy, in his first career start after 24 relief appearances, scattered three hits in his five innings of work while striking out seven. Sophomore righty Harper Flint (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) came on for the final two innings and fanned two.

Bentley's eight hits included two apiece from Beauregard and Purcell.

The two teams will wrap up their series Sunday at noon with Bentley seeking to complete a four-game opening weekend sweep.
