5 Home Runs Power Bentley to Season-Opening Win over Assumption

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Sophomore shortstop Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS) homered twice and drove in five runs in his Bentley University debut to power the Falcons to a season-opening 13-8 win over Assumption University at Northeast Regional Park Friday afternoon.

The two homers by DeMartinis III were among five hit by the Falcons, who overcame an early 5-0 deficit to gain the victory. Also going deep were senior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS), senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) and junior second baseman Tyler Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy).

After Assumption (1-3) scored four times in the second and another in the third, Bentley turned the game around with a four-run seventh inning. Beauregard hit a two-run blast to left, Zupkus doubled in a run and scored on a ground out, and DeMartinis III, whose father played for the Falcons nearly 30 years ago, sent the ball over left field fence for a three-run shot.

Gonzalez and Zupkus went back-to-back to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and DeMartinis III hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 11-2.

Bentley extended its lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Freshman George Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Henry B. Platt HS), the most effective of three Bentley pitchers, earned the win in his college debut. He entered in the third and he gave first-year head coach Mike Hill 2.2 innings of one-hit scoreless relief. Classmate Pat Heber (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS) picked up the save after striking out seven in his four innings of work.

Bentley totaled 14 hits with each of the top seven in the order all having two. Zupkus followed DeMartinis II in the RBI category, with three.

Assumption hit three home runs of its own, including a three-run homer by senior catcher Christopher Rabias (Tyngsborough, Mass.).

The two teams will continue their four-game series with a noon doubleheader at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
