Falcons Swept by Pace, 5-4 & 17-2; DeFelice’s No. 9 Retired Between Games

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Graduate right fielder Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J.) had five hits and four RBI as Pace University swept Bentley University, 5-4 and 17-2, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at DeFelice Field.

In between games, it was announced that Bentley would be retiring coach Bob DeFelice's number 9. The only head coach in program history, DeFelice will be stepping down following the season after a remarkable 54 years at the helm.

In the opener, Pace opened a 4-0 lead with three runs in the second and another in the fourth. Freshman shortstop Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J.) accounted for three of the four runs with two scoring on his second-inning triple and another on his fourth-inning sacrifice fly.

Bentley battled back to forge a tie with four runs in the fifth. Senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS) drew a bases-loaded walk, junior catcher Brian Lindsey (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS) had a two-run single to right and junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) was walked with the bases loaded.

Pace (21-17) scored the game-winner in the seventh and once again Baronian was involved. He led off with a single to left and scored on a ground-rule double down the left field line by graduate left fielder Mitch McCabe (Chelmsford).

Sophomore Dan Brown (East Northport, N.Y.) saved the game for the Setters with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.

In game two, Pace jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first inning and added to its total with two runs in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and another run in the fifth. Three runs in the seventh capped the scoring.

Jacobi, one of three Setters with three hits, drove in four runs to lead the offense. He walked and scored in the first, had an RBI single in the second, singled in another run in the third and had a two-run double in the fourth.

Both Bentley runs were scored in the first, making it a 5-2 game at the time. Junior third baseman Cory Bright (Melrose/Bishop Fenwick HS) had an RBI single to right and senior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) drove in the second with a single to left.

Auditore had two of the Falcons' seven hits in the nightcap.

Bentley will return to action Thursday with a 3:00 game at Stonehill College.
