Bentley Takes Two from St. Michael’s, 4-3 & 23-6; Zupkus Drives in 5

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) drove in five runs, including four in the nightcap, and junior third baseman Cory Bright (Melrose, Mass./Bishop Fenwick HS) was five-for-five in game two as Bentley University swept St. Michael's College, 4-3 and 23-6, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field.

In the 23-run explosion, Bentley used 22 hits and took advantage of nine walks and four errors. The Falcons, who saw everyone in the starting lineup amass at least one hit, one run and one RBI, erupted for six runs in the first and added to their total with one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, five in the sixth and six in the seventh.

Both Zupkus and junior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) had four RBI for the Falcons with both players 3-for-5. Zupkus had two-run singles in both the first and third innings while Rizzuto had an RBI single to left center in the second, a two-run single through the left side in the sixth and an RBI single up the middle in the seventh.

Junior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS), who homered in the opener, scored four times. Crossing home plate three-times apiece were Bright, Zupkus and sophomore second baseman Tony Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy).

Bright, who raised his batting average to .328, had two doubles among his five hits. Senior DH Charlie Auditore (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) also had a productive day at the plate, with four hits in six at bats.

Graduate left-hander Jared Brooks (Hollis Center, Maine/South Portland HS) earned his sixth win of the season for Bentley after pitching the first six innings and striking out nine.

In the opener, Bentley took a 2-1 lead when Lindsay led off the fifth with a home run to right, his first of the year.

The Falcons made it 4-1 with two runs in the seventh. Rizzuto had a sacrifice fly and senior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) followed with an RBI double to left.

Those two runs proved to be essential as St. Michael's (3-26, 2-14 NE10) scored twice in the last of the seventh and had the bases loaded before sophomore Matt Sevigny (Rocky Hill, Conn.) lined out to third for the final out.

Graduate right-hander Jimmy Hodgson (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) pitched the first six innings, scattering ten hits, and junior David Morganelli (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Reg. HS) picked up his third save of the season.

Bentley's seven hits included two apiece by Lindsay and junior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS).

Bentley, 13-22 overall and 8-12 NE10), will begin a three-game series against Pace University Friday with a 3:30 pm game on DeFelice Field.
