Caldwell Stuns Bentley, 2-0, with Walk-Off 2-Run Homer

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – After eight and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball, Caldwell University sophomore right fielder Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) homered with one aboard to give the Cougars a 2-0 walk-off victory over Bentley University in non-conference baseball Monday at the Santaluces Athletic Complex.

Bentley graduate right-hander Jimmy Hodgson (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) retired the first two batters in faced in the last half of the ninth. After freshman DH Santo Anzalone (Middle Village, N.Y.) kept the inning alive with a single to right. Putney followed by driving the ball over the left field fence, giving the Cougars the sudden victory.

It spoiled a strong performance by Hodgson, who had limited the Cougars to four hits and two walks prior to the ninth. Caldwell threatened in the eighth but Hodgson was supported by senior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) throwing out a runner trying to score.

Bentley managed only two hits in the game, both coming in the ninth inning. Junior DH Cory Bright (Melrose, Mass./Bishop Fenwick HS) ended the no-hit bid with a double to left and junior Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) followed with a single in the same direction. Bentley's scoring opportunity went by the boards when Bright was picked off for the second out and junior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS) flied out.

Prior to the ninth, Bentley's best scoring chance came in the fifth when the Falcons had two on without an out after a walk and hit batter.

The shutout belonged to freshman righty Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y., who walked two and struck out nine.

The two teams will meet again on the same field on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 pm.
