Assumption Outlasts Bentley, 10-6, in 15 Innings

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – After Bentley University scored three two-out runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extras, the Assumption University Greyhounds scored four times in the 15th to defeat the Falcons, 10-6, in non-conference college baseball Saturday afternoon at Lake Brantley High School.

Following a walk, a sacrifice and a passed ball, Assumption sophomore second baseman Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to left to drive in the go-ahead run. Later in the frame, junior Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) knocked in the Greyhounds' eighth run with his sixth hit of the game. Senior shortstop Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass.) followed with a two-run single, making it a four-run difference.

Senior righty Trevor Moulton (Coventry, Conn.), who scored the first run of the 15th for Assumption, retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory.

In the bottom of the ninth, after two were out, Bentley loaded the bases on a single and two hit-by-pitches. Senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) singled to right, driving in two runs to make it a 5-4 game. Junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) followed with a single to right, driving in junior third baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) with the equalizer.

Both teams scored an unearned run in the 13th inning.

Bentley received seven innings of quality relief from freshman righty Marc Cedrone (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS). He allowed six hits and two unearned runs while striking out six batters.

The Falcons, 1-4, totaled 11 hits including three apiece from graduate center fielder Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), Auditore and senior first baseman Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS). Junior third baseman Steve Ruzzuto (Belmont, Mass./ Belmont HS) didn't have a hit, but did reach base for the 33rd consecutive game with a walk.

Assumption pitchers registered 16 strikeouts, including 11 in 5.2 innings by junior lefty Jack Choate (North Grafton, Mass.), and stranded 15 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the sixth.

The 21-hit Assumption attack was led by Acosta, who was 6-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI. Hamel and Barry also had three hits, as did freshman first baseman Sean Moynihan (Middleton, Mass.).

The two teams will play the rubber game of their three-game series Sunday at 11 am at Lake Brantley.
