Zupkus Gives Bentley Game 1 Walk-Off Win; Stonehill Comes From Behind to Take Game 2

WALTHAM, Mass. – A two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh by sophomore right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) gave Bentley University a 3-2 walk-off win over Stonehill College in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader at DeFelice Field Saturday afternoon. It was the Falcons' second walk-off victory in as many days and fourth of the season.

Bentley was looking at another walk-off in game two, but were denied in that one, falling to the Skyhawks 7-6. The Falcons had runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, but Stonehill got a game-ending strikeout to salvage the split.

After splitting the four-game series, Bentley finished the regular season at 16-10 overall and 15-9 NE10. Stonehill wrapped up at 17-14 overall and 12-12 conference.

The rally in the opener began with sophomore DH Joe Boushell (Mansfield/Wheeler School) drawing a one-out walk and senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS) singling to left. Following a fielder's choice that saw freshman center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS) replace Boushell on base, Cacciatore stole second to give the Falcons two runners in scoring position.

Zupkus doubled to left with Boushell scoring the tying run and Cacciatore came home with the game-winner.

Stonehill struck first, scoring twice in the second inning on a single by sophomore left fielder Conor Kiely (Portsmouth, R.I.). Bentley got one run back in the fourth when graduate first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury HS), a .477 hitter, scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a single through the left side.

Senior righty Jimmy Hodgson (Newton/Newton North) earned the win for the Falcons following a complete-game five-hitter. He walked two and struck out five while outdueling Stonehill junior Jonathan Rice (Hopedale).

In game two, Bentley took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the third. Senior shortstop Nick Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) had an RBI single, Zupkus scored on a double play and Halloran scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams scored in the fourth and fifth innings with the Falcons on top after five, 6-4. Auditore had an RBI double in the fourth and freshman second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole/Walpole HS) an RBI single in the fifth for the Falcons.

Stonehill scored three times in the eighth to go up by one, 7-6. Freshman right fielder Graham Herrick (Sheffield) had an RBI single, junior second baseman Matt Farragher (Mansfield) scored on a ground out and an infield single by senior center fielder John Orzechowski (Monroe, Conn.) allowed Herrick to score the unearned go-ahead run.

Both teams had 11 hits with Zupkus, Walonis and Auditore each having two for Bentley. For Stonehill, junior Nick Lucier (Sandown, N.H.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored  before coming in from shortstop to record the game-ending strikeout.

Bentley will host Saint Anselm Northeast-10 first-round playoff game on Tuesday.
