Bentley Uses Outstanding Pitching to Outlast No. 11 SNHU in 13; Penmen Come Back to Gain Split

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Graduate student Paul Frisoli (Watertown, Mass./Arlington Catholic HS) and senior Brandon Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) combined on a 13-inning three-hit shutout and junior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) drove in the game's only run in the top of the 13th as Bentley University defeated 11th-ranked Southern New Hampshire for the second straight game in the first of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader Sunday night at the SNHU Field.

The Penmen, who were undefeated entering the weekend, came back to take game two, 16-5.

After splitting the four-game series, Bentley returned to campus 14-8 overall and 13-7 NE10, good for third in the Northeast Division. SNHU finished the weekend at 14-2 overall and conference.

With two outs in the 13th, graduate DH/first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) singled to short and moved to second on a throwing error. Sears followed with a single through the left side, plating Berardino with the game's only run.

In the bottom of the 13th, Ostiguy retired the home team in order, on a foul out, a fly ball and a called third strike.

Bentley left runners on third in the seventh and 11th innings, and SNHU did the same in the eighth.

Frisoli pitched the first nine innings of the scheduled seven-inning game. He allowed only two hits, struck out four and walked the same number. Ostiguy, in his four innings of work, gave up two hits with one walk and the game-ending punchout.

Their counterpart from SNHU, graduate right-hander Wesley Tobin, gave up three hits in his nine innings and struck out 15. Bentley fanned a total of 23 times, with reliever Ricky Alexy (Needham) picking up eight.

Berardino, still hitting an even .500 for the season after five hits in the doubleheader, had three hits and Sears had two.

After the 1-0 loss and its second straight game with three hits, Southern New Hampshire found its offense between games, with the Penmen jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first, including a leadoff home run by red-shirt freshman shortstop Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.). A five-run fifth made it 10-1, and the Penmen closed out the scoring with four in the eighth.

SNHU pounded out 17 hits, including three apiece by red-shirt freshman third baseman Christian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore right fielder Kieran Dowd (East Islip, N.Y.). Mercedes had two RBI and both scored twice.

Berardino, who extended his hitting streak to 20, and freshman DH Cory Bright (Melrose, Mass./Bishop Fenwick HS) each had two hits for Bentley, with Bright driving in two runs.

Next on the Bentley schedule is a four-game series May 7-8 at home against Stonehill College.
