Stonehill Takes Down Bentley, 7-4, in Lightning-Shortened Contest

WALTHAM, Mass. – Back-to-back RBI singles to left propelled Stonehill College to a 3-0 first-inning lead and the Skyhawks went on to post a 7-4 win over Bentley University in non-conference baseball Wednesday afternoon at DeFelice Field. The game was halted in the middle of the seventh due to lightning.

Bentley graduate first baseman Ryan Bernardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury HS) stayed sizzling hot at the plate for the Falcons with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly in three plate appearances. He finished the game with a conference-best .483 batting average and a 15-game hitting streak.

Stonehill struck for two runs in the top of the first, taking a lead it would never give up. Sophomore left fielder Conor Kiely (Portsmouth, R.I.) led off with a single to right and stole second to move into scoring position. Sophomore catcher Blaine Lidsky (South Kingstown, R.I.) singled to left for the game's first run. After he stole second, he scored on a single in the same direction by freshman right fielder Graham Harrick (Sheffield). Later in the inning, Harrick came home on an error to make it a 3-0 game.

Bentley got all but one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) singled to right, senior shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/ Hopkinton HS) walked and sophomore third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS) singled through the left side to load the bases.

That brought Berardino to the plate and he came through with a two-run single up the middle.

After Stonehill (10-9) scored twice in the third to go up 5-2, Bentley scored once in the bottom of the inning. After a walk, an error and fly ball out, Berardino recorded his fourth sacrifice fly of the season.

Bentley picked up one more in the fourth, drawing within one at 5-4 when sophomore shortstop Joe Boushell (Mansfield/Wheeler School) scored on a ground out by freshman center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS).

Stonehill, which outhit the home team 12-5, pushed the differential to three runs, 7-4, with a two-run single by Lidsky in the sixth inning.

This weekend, Bentley is at 11th-ranked Southern New Hampshire for a four-game series. The two clubs are scheduled for noon doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday.
