Bridgeport Comes from Behind for 6-5 Win over Bentley University

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Sophomore shortstop Logan Allen (Magnolia, Texas) drove in two runs during a five-run seventh inning, propelling the University of Bridgeport to a 6-5 win over Bentley University in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Lake Brantley High School. It was the second straight day that the Purple Knights scored five in the seventh to defeat the Falcons.

Bentley went into the sixth inning riding a 4-0 lead behind the pitching of junior lefty Jared Brooks (Hollis Center, Maine/Cheverus HS) and a home run by senior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS).

It was still a three-run game entering the seventh. After the first two batters reached on a hit-by-pitch and a single, Brooks was lifted. Four of the first five batters that the bullpen faced reached with Allen's two-run single giving Bridgeport the lead at 6-4.

Bentley got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when senior first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a ground out by graduate third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS).

The Falcons had their chances, stranding runners on the corners in the seventh and loading the bases with one out in the eighth. Bridgeport brought in freshman right-hander Tyler Solomon (Blue Point, N.Y.), and after a walk to Troiani, he struck out the next two Bentley hitters to preserve the lead. He also retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save.

Bentley finished with a 12-10 hit advantage with Hopkins leading the way with three. Pierce was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Figueira also had two hits.

For Bridgeport, Allen had two hits and two RBI, giving him four hits and five RBI in the first two games of the four game series.

The two teams will be back on Lake Brantley Monday and Tuesday, playing at 11 am each day.
