Bridgeport Rallies Twice to Sweep Bentley, 5-3 and 3-2

TAMPA, Fla. – Junior right-hander Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) saved the opening game and earned the win in the nightcap as the University of Bridgeport twice rallied from 2-1 deficits to sweep Bentley University, 5-3 and 3-2, in a non-conference college baseball doubleheader at the University of Tampa's UT Stadium Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Bridgeport (4-7) took the lead with a three-run seventh after the Falcons brought a 2-1 lead into the inning. Junior second baseman Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.) drove in the tying run with a one-out single, the Purple Knights took the lead on as senior first baseman Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) scored on a fielder's choice and DiNicola scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Bentley had taken a 2-1 lead in the fourth after senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) led off with a triple. He scored on a single to left by sophomore first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) and Grover later came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers, Mass./BB&N).

Bentley (2-12) was outhit 7-4 with DiNicola and senior catcher Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) each having two for Bridgeport.

Oswald struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to save the game with senior righty Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.), who struck out four in his eight innings of work.

In the nightcap, Bridgeport scored the tying run in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded wild pitch after the Purple Knights filled them with three straight singles.

In the ninth, senior left fielder Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) tripled to center with one out and scored what proved to be the game-winner when senior shortstop Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) followed with a single to right.

Both Bentley runs were scored in the sixth inning, on an RBI triple to left by sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) and a single through the left side by freshman DH Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS).

Bentley's eight hits included two apiece from Farry and Pierce. Bridgeport totaled a dozen, including three from grad student DH Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.).

Oswald pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four.

The two teams will complete the four-game series with a game at noon Sunday, also at Tampa.
