Korwek Heads List of Five Falcons Recognized by Northeast-10; DeFelice Named NE-10 Coach of Year

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) tops a list of five Bentley University baseball players recognized  by the Northeast-10 with the announcement of the all-conference team today.

Korwek was selected for the first team, senior right-hander Jeff Croteau (Auburn/Auburn HS) was chosen for second-team accolades, the third team included senior righty JP Ashline (Clinton/Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) and junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS), and freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) was named to the All-Rookie team.

In addition, Bob DeFelice, the dean of Division II baseball coaches nationally, was selected by his peers for the 2013 Bob Bellizzi Coach of the Year award. The award is named after the late baseball coach at The College of Saint Rose.

Korwek is making his second appearance on the All-Conference team, having received third-team honors a year ago. He leads the Falcons in hitting at .295, had a 26-game hitting streak from Mar. 24-Apr. 30, and has been directly involved with a quarter of the team's scoring with 29 runs and 29 RBI. Korwek also leads the conference with 24 runners thrown out attempting to steal.

Korwek, who has started 168 of the 173 games he's played as a Falcon, has a .281 career average with his 190 hits tied for ninth in program history.

Croteau, who had improved each year he's been at Bentley, has had a standout senior year, posting a 7-4 record with a 2.02 ERA. He pitched a five-hit shutout against Southern New Hampshire last month and has allowed one earned run or less in six of his ten starts. Croteau has limited opposing hitters to a .226 average and has a strikeout-walk ratio of 3.1-1.

Croteau, number two in program history in career pitching appearances (51), has won 12 games over the course of the last two seasons and set a school record in 2012 with 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings.

Ashline has posted a 6-2 record and a 2.44 ERA this spring, and won five consecutive starts from Mar. 30-Apr. 26. Included during that run was a three-hit shutout of Franklin Pierce and a six-hitter in a 7-1 win over Southern New Hampshire, with both of those teams ranked in the top 25 at the time.

Ashline owns a career record of 15-10, including 12-5 since the start of last season, with the .600 winning percentage fifth best in program history.

Keady, a fixture in center field and in the lead-off spot for the Falcons over the last three years, also earned third-team honors in 2012. Currently second on the team with a .279 batting average, he's scored 39 runs, the third straight season that he's led the Falcons in that category.  With another year still to play, he's tenth in Bentley history with 118 career runs scored.

Keady has stolen 35 bases this season, breaking the school record he set in 2011, and his 93 career steals is the most in school history. It's also the second highest total by any active Division II player in the country.

Mondor has hit .236 with 25 runs scored and 18 RBI while excelling defensively at first base. He leads the Northeast-10 in putouts (454) and set a NCAA record (all divisions) with 36 putouts in a 16-inning win at Rollins back in February.

DeFelice directed the Falcons to a 26-20 record during the 2013 regular season, including 22-14 against East Region opposition, with his team seventh in the most recent East Region rankings after being sixth in the preseason Northeast Division coaches poll. The former catcher works closely with the pitchers and the Bentley staff has amassed an impressive 2.81 ERA, ranking in the top ten in Division II nationally. Bentley is also in the top ten in fewest walks and WHIP.

The current season was DeFelice's 45th as the only head coach in Bentley history, and the team's second place finish in the NE-10's Northeast Division was the Falcons' best in the highly competitive conference since 1997. This is the second time that the member of eight Hall of Fames has been selected as the NE-10 Coach of the Year.

Bentley will host Southern New Hampshire today at 2 pm in the single-elimination round of the Northeast-10 playoffs.
