Gillis Drives in 3 as Bentley Rallies for 7-6 Win over Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) drove in three runs, including two on a triple during a pivotal seventh inning, and scored twice as Bentley University rallied for an 8-6 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 non-divisional baseball Monday afternoon at windy DeFelice Field.

Bentley, which faced a 6-2 deficit midway through the game, rebounded with one in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth to improve to 16-15 overall and 16-8 against NCAA Division II East Region opposition. Assumption fell to 6-15 after seeing its losing streak reach 10 games.

The comeback began in the sixth with senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) leading off with a single to left center. He advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single up the middle by sophomore shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS).

Assumption went to its bullpen to start the seventh and a trio of Greyhounds relievers combined to give up five runs over the next two innings. Sophomore center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) greeted senior righty Frank Flynn (Worcester) with a double to right. Freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater/Xaverian Bros. HS) worked the count full before drawing a walk, and Gillis followed with his bases-clearing triple, bringing the Falcons within two at 6-5.

Grad student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) walked and Korwek grounded into a fielder's choice with Gillis coming in from third with the tying run. The Hounds tried to turn two on the play, but the throw to first was wild, enabling Korwek to go to second. Following an out and a pitching change, senior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) singled to right center, driving in Korwek with the go-ahead run.

Bentley, which has bettered last year's win total with at least 20 games still to play, added an insurance run in the eighth with Muir drawing a two-out walk and scoring all the way from first when Gillis' pop-up to second was dropped.

Junior right-hander Jeff Croteau (Auburn/Auburn HS) struggled early but went the distance for his fourth straight complete game victory. He scattered ten hits (all but one in the first five innings), walked two and struck out three. The walks were the first he'd allowed since mid-February, ending a string of 34 straight innings without a free pass.

Bentley's 12 hits included three by Keady and two apiece for Muir, Gillis and Korwek.

Assumption received two hits from NE-10 batting leader Shane Keddy (Worcester) and a three-run homer over the 410 sign in dead-center by senior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton).

The two teams will meet again Tuesday at 3:30 pm, also at DeFelice Field.
