Keady, Korwek Help Bentley to 5th Straight Win, 6-4 over Merrimack

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore left fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) scored twice and senior designated hitter Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) had a two-run single as Bentley University ran its winning streak to five games with a 6-4 Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division win over Merrimack College in college baseball at DeFelice Field Wednesday afternoon.

Bentley, 8-1 in its last nine games, improved to 13-11 overall and 13-4 against NCAA Division II East Region opposition with the win in its Northeast Division opener. Merrimack dropped to 11-12 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast.

Bentley jumped on top with a manufactured run in the bottom of the first. Keady hit a bloop single to right, took second on a passed ball, went to third on the front end of a double steal and scampered home when the throw went into left.

The Falcons extended their lead to 5-0 with four runs in the third and again Keady was involved. He drew a one-out walk, advanced 90 feet on an a single by freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater/Xaverian Bros. HS), moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy).

After a walk to grad student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS), Korwek hit a two-run single to right and Johnson scored the team's fourth run of the season on a ground out by junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School).

Merrimack picked up two unearned runs in the top of the fourth, and Bentley got one of those back in the bottom of the same inning when senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) drove the ball over the left field fence for his first home run of the spring.

The Warriors closed the gap with single runs in the fifth and seven innings before freshman reliever Connor Root (Nashua, N.H./Nashua HS North) closed the door. He left the bases loaded in the seventh, stranded two on in the eighth and turned in a solid ninth to earn his first collegiate win.

Merrimack outhit the Falcons 11-8, but left a dozen runners on base. Junior pitcher/DH Joe Mantoni (Northbridge), who gave up five runs in three innings on the mound, led the Merrimack offense with four hits.

Muir and Rey each had two hits for the Falcons.

Bentley will be at home for a three games against Saint Anselm this weekend with the two clubs playing a doubleheader at noon Saturday and a single at the same time Sunday.
