Johnson, Keady Help Bentley Top Pace, 6-4, for 5th Win in 6 Games

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Graduate student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford HS) slammed a two-run homer in the fourth and sophomore center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) also drove in two runs as Bentley University won for the fifth time in six games on its current Florida trip, 6-4 over Pace University in non-conference baseball at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

With the Falcons trailing 2-1, junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) led off the fourth with a single up the middle.  Johnson, a former three-year starter at quarterback for the Falcons, followed with his second home run of the season, the ball clearing the right-center field fence to put the Falcons up one. The two RBI gave the Bentley right fielder a team-high 13 for the season.

Bentley added to its lead with two more runs in the sixth with Keady playing a key role in the inning. He singled up the middle to drive in senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS), who had singled and been sacrificed to second. Keady stole second, his sixth of the season, and scored on an RBI single by junior shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy).

After Pace cut the advantage to 5-3 with a run in the seventh, Bentley answered in the eighth with an unearned run. Senior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) reached on an error to begin the inning and scored on a single to left by senior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS).

Junior righty JP Ashline (Clinton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough HS) notched his second win in as many decisions this spring after pitching 7.2 innings in his first start. He yielded nine hits and allowed four runs while striking out one.

Senior lefty Blaine McLean (Medford, Mass./Cushing Academy) took over for McLean with two out in the eighth and retired the only batter he faced on a fly ball to right to strand two runners on base. Sophomore Dante Padovani (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield HS) picked up the save with a scoreless ninth. He gave up a single and a walk before getting Setter clean-up hitter James Pjura to pop up for the game's final out.

Bentley's 11 hits included two apiece for Keady, Gillis and Lane. Right fielder Chris Roemer (Ardsley, N.Y.) was 3-for-5 for Pace, which dropped to 6-6 on the season.

Bentley, 7-10 overall and 7-3 against East Region opposition, completes the Florida portion of its 2012 schedule Saturday with a 1 pm game against C.W. Post at Rollins.
