Six-Hit Shutout from Croteau Leads Bentley Past Bridgeport, 11-0

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Junior righty Jeff Croteau (Auburn, Mass./Auburn HS) fired a six-hit shutout and junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) led a 19-hit attack as Bentley University won for the fourth time in five games, 11-0 over the University of Bridgeport Thursday afternoon in non-conference college baseball.

Croteau needed only 99 pitches for his route-going performance, one that saw him strike out one and not issue a walk. Twenty-one of the outs he recorded came via ground balls, and he allowed only one runner to advance beyond first base.

His teammates staked him to a lead before he stepped on the mound for the first time. Sophomore center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) led off the game with a single to center, stole second and scored on a single to left by Gillis.

The Falcons exploded for four in the second inning, making it 5-0. Senior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) had a sacrifice fly, senior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) scored on a catcher's error, junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./ Pingree School) had an RBI single, and grad student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford HS) picked up an RBI on a ground out.

Bentley added to its lead with two in the fifth, one in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning.

Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit with Gillis leading the way. He drove in three runs while boosting his team-leading average to .328. In addition, In addition, Gillis tied a school record with nine assists. Rey had a busy game at first with his 20 putouts just one shy of the all-time Bentley  single game record.

Sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) had three RBI, and Bentley received two hits apiece from Keady, Rey, Johnson, senior DH Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) and senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS). Baggett and Eruzione each had two RBI, and both Keady and Lane scored three times.

The win boosted the Falcons to 6-10 overall, including 6-3 against teams from the East Region. Bentley will wrap up the Florida portion of its schedule with games against Pace University Friday (11 am) and C.W. Post Saturday (1 pm). Both will be played at Rollins College.
