Seven Scoreless Innings by Finneran Leads Bentley Past Pace, 7-0

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Right-hander Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS), a graduate student who ranks number one in Bentley University history in both career ERA and winning percentage, threw seven scoreless innings as the Falcons posted a 7-0 non-conference win over Pace University in college baseball Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium, on the campus of Rollins College.

Finneran combined with junior righty Jeff Croteau (Auburn, Mass./Auburn HS) on an eight-hit shutout as Bentley improved to 3-9 on the season, including 3-2 against East Region foes. Finneran, who notched his second win of 2012, gave up four hits and three walks while striking out four. Croteau scattered four hits during his two innings of work and struck out a pair.

Finneran, now 15-6 during his Bentley career, had the lead before he stepped to the mound for the first time as the Falcons picked up a run in the top of the first. Sophomore designated hitter Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) opened the game with a walk, and after being sacrificed to second, scored in a single up the middle by junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy).

It stayed a 1-0 game until the eighth when Bentley broke it open with five runs, all unearned, against a trio of Setter hurlers. Senior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) and Keady reached on a pair of errors to open the inning. Following a strikeout, an intentional walk to Gillis and a pitching change, right fielder Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford HS) delivered a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Eruzione.

After a walk loaded the bases and another pitching change, sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Cushing Academy) was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run, and senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating another.  Senior first baseman Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) capped the big inning with a two-run single.

A Gillis sacrifice fly in the ninth accounted for the game's final run.

Six different players accounted for each of the Bentley hits. Keady scored three times and both Gillis and Korwek had two RBI.

Bentley is back at Alfond Monday night for a 6 pm encounter with C.W. Post.
