Two Late Runs Lift Assumption Past Bentley, 7-6

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Assumption College picked up the tying run in the bottom of the eighth and scored an unearned run in the last of the ninth to get by Bentley University, 7-6, in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

The back-and-forth contest saw Bentley answer a four-run sixth by Assumption with three in the top of the seventh to even the score at five apiece. Sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) led off with a single up the middle and seniors Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) and Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) both drew walks to load the bases.

A wild pitch allowed Witkowski and Baggett to score, and following a pitching change, a ground out and a throwing error, freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) singled through the left side to drive in Korwek with the tying run.

Bentley reclaimed the lead in the eighth when Witkowski walked and scored on a double to left by Baggett, the second RBI of the game for the Falcon DH/catcher.

The lead was short-lived as the Greyhounds answered in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore right fielder Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn.) got it started with a two-out single to right. Junior righty Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) came on in relief, and he gave up hits to the first two batters he faced, with a single to right by freshman DH Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn.) scoring Clark with the tying run.

After Bentley couldn't take advantage of two Assumption errors in the top of the ninth, the Greyhounds ended the game in the last of the ninth. Senior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, took second on an error, third on a sacrifice and scored on a walk-off single by sophomore first baseman Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn.).

Assumption (1-3) outhit the Falcons 12-3, with four different Hounds having two apiece, including Quinn and Lopes.

Bentley, 2-9, returns to Winter Park next Sunday for a 4 pm game against Pace University, the start of a seven-game road trip.
