2-Run Double by Witkowski Helps Bentley Edge Saint Anselm, 3-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) capped a three-run third inning with a two-run double and Bentley University went on to a 3-2 win over Saint Anselm College in non-conference college baseball Friday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Senior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) got things going for the Falcons in the third, with a one-out double down the right field line. After a single by freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) put runners on the corners, junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) singled through the left side, driving in Lane with the game's first run.

Following an error that loaded the bases and a strikeout, Witkowski delivered with his two-bagger to left plating both Gillis and Muir.

In a game that saw all the scoring crammed into the one inning, Saint Anselm parlayed a lead-off single, three walks, a hit batter and a throwing error into its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, junior center fielder Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) sacrificed, but on the play, an errant throw to second on the play allowed both junior second baseman Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) and sophomore shortstop Tito Liubreres (Lawrence, Mass.) to score.

A hit batter and a walk followed, but right-hander Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS) escaped further trouble by getting a fly ball to end the inning.

Bentley threatened a couple more times, but failed add any insurance. The Falcons had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, and the same situation in the seventh.

Junior Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) came in to close for the Falcons in the ninth. A walk, a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt put senior Jeff Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) on third with one out, forcing Bentley to bring the infield in.  Pinch-hitter Kyle Grumoli (South Hadley, Mass.) grounded to short for the second out, and after another walk, Rey got sophomore left fielder Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) to fly out to left for the final out.

Finneran earned the win for Bentley with five innings of three-hit pitching. He struck five and walked three while yielding the two runs. Junior Jeff Croteau (Auburn, Mass./Auburn HS) followed him to the mound and allowed just two hits in three innings of work.

Bentley outhit the Hawks 9-5 with Lane (3-for-5) the only Falcon with more than one. His effort out of the leadoff spot boosted his average to .348.

Bentley, which was playing its first of the season against an East Region club, improved to 1-7 while Saint Anselm dipped to 3-7.

The two clubs will play again at 11 am on Saturday, with Bentley also facing Assumption at 2 pm.
