Foley Double Gives Assumption 5-4 Win over Bentley in 11

WALTHAM, Mass. -- An 11th-inning RBI double by senior right fielder Mike Foley (Worcester), his fourth hit of the day, broke a 4-4 tie and lifted Assumption College to a 5-4 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Friday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Sophomore second baseman Shane Keddy (Worcester) was hit by a pitch to open the 11th and stole second to move into scoring position. One out later, Foley doubled to deep left center, with Keddy easily scoring from second for the go-ahead run.

Bentley, down 3-0 midway through the sixth, cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, and like the 11th, the inning was launched with a hit batter and a stolen base, this time by junior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop/Winthrop HS). Freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/ Norwood HS) followed with a run-scoring triple to left, and he scored on a sacrifice fly from senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington/Lexington HS).

The Falcons tied it up in the seventh. Sophomore second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) led off with a single to left, moved to third on a bad-hop base hit by junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) and scored on a sac fly by junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School).

Both clubs put up a run in the eighth inning. Assumption took advantage of three walks and an error while a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) scored Keady for the Falcons. Keady led off the inning with a walk, stole his school-record 31st base and moved to third on a Curley single.

Both teams stranded a runner in scoring position in the ninth and went easily in the 10th. After the Hounds took the lead, the Falcons had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but freshman Cody Rocha (Fall River) locked up the win by getting a game-ending ground ball to short.

Assumption, which improved to 18-28 overall and 9-15 NE-10 with its fifth straight win, outhit the Falcons, 13-8, with Foley leading the way with four and junior catcher Tim Quinn (Holden) following with three. Keady finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Bentley.

Bentley (14-27, 8-16 NE-10) will close out its season with a three-game weekend series against Adelphi University. Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon and Sunday's single game is slated for 1 pm, with all three being played at home.
