Korwek Walk-off Single Gives Bentley Game 2 Win and Split of Doubleheader with New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. -- A ninth-inning, two-out, bases-loaded single by junior first baseman Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) gave Bentley University a walk-off 4-3 game two win over the University of New Haven and a split of their Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field. The Chargers had taken the first game by a count of 7-1.

With one out in the bottom of the night, senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington/ Lexington HS) singled to center. Senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) followed with a triple off the right field fence, Curley held up at third on the play. After an intentional walk, senior closer Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn.) was brought in from the Charger bullpen.

With the infield in, Rossi got sophomore second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./ Lawrence Academy) to bounce to short, with Curley thrown out at the plate for the second out. He also got a grounder from Korwek, but his ball was just out of the reach of the second baseman, allowing Hardy to race home with the game-winning run.

New Haven (24-15, 12-10 NE-10) threatened to break the 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth after two singles and a sacrifice gave the visitors two runners in scoring position with one out. A fly ball to left, off the bat of junior right fielder David Wirkus (Orange, Conn.), fell just foul, and Bentley sophomore starter John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic's HS) stranded the runners by striking out Wirkus and junior left fielder Kyle Pettoruto (Andover) to end the inning.

Yohe, in his eight innings of work, struck out seven, didn't walk anyone and gave up 11 hits.

Bentley (12-25, 6-14 NE-10) struck for two runs in the first inning. Freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/ Norwood HS) led off with a walk, stole second, and came home on a throwing error.  Later in the inning, Hardy singled and scored on a single by Gillis.

New Haven came back to tie the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning. Sophomore catcher Shane O'Connell (Cranston, R.I.) led off with a single, and after a double by sophomore center fielder Jack Heary (Portland, Maine), scored on a grounder to third.

Bentley picked up the equalizer in the seventh. Keady opened the inning by beating out a bunt single. He stole second (tying the single season school record of 27), moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a Curley double to right.

Hardy and Korwek each had three hits, and Bentley received two apiece from Curley, Gillis and junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS). Junior Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) earned his first career win after a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

In the opener, New Haven senior righty Matt Sommo (Clinton, Conn.) scattered eight hits over eight innings while his teammates were capitalizing on 11 hits and three Bentley errors (which resulted in four unearned runs).

Freshman first baseman Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn.) had a two-run double in the fourth to give UNH a 2-1 lead, Wirkus had a two-run double in the sixth, and the Chargers padded their lead with three more in the seventh.

Curley had three hits for Bentley and scored the Falcons' only run on a passed ball in the fourth.

Bentley is back at home Monday for a 3:30 pm game with Saint Anselm.
