Fast Start Propels Southern New Hampshire to 15-7 Win over Bentley; Curley Homers for Falcons

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Freshman left fielder Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) and sophomore shortstop Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) each drove in three runs as Southern New Hampshire University erupted for 11 runs in the first four innings and went on to a 15-7 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Friday afternoon at Penmen Field.

The Penmen (21-19, 9-11 NE-10 after completing a two-game series sweep) jumped on top with four runs in the bottom of the first after the Falcons had left the bases loaded in the top of the inning. Grad student Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) had an RBI single for the first run, Boulter followed with a two-run single up the middle and Boulter scored the fourth run on a double down the left field line by senior first baseman Robert Wronski (Arlington, Mass.).

Bentley's comeback bid began in the third when senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) lined a two-run homer down the left field line.

Southern New Hampshire more than answered in the bottom half of the same inning, scoring five times to make it a 10-2 game. Four of the five were unearned after a two-out error prolonged the inning. Two batters later, Stanton slammed a three-run homer to left, his fourth round tripper of the season.

Boulter added to the SNHU lead when he led off the fourth inning with an inside the park home run.

Bentley (11-23, 5-12 NE-10) closed to within four, 11-7, with two runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth inning. Both runs in the fifth were unearned, as the result of two errors, and the eighth inning included a two-run double by junior left fielder Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) and a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS).

An eighth-inning grand slam by sophomore DH Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) essentially ended Bentley's comeback hopes, stretching the Penmen lead to eight runs.

The Falcons finished the day with 10 hits, including two apiece by Curley, junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS), freshman DH Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) and sophomore second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy), who lifted his team-best average to .333. SNHU had 13 hits, including three by O'Neil, who doubled twice.

Junior righty Brad Monroe (Hampton, N.H.), the first of five SNHU pitchers, earned his fifth win of the spring after a six-inning stint in which he allowed five hits and four runs while striking out five.

Bentley is back in action Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader in Albany, N.Y. at the College of Saint Rose. The Falcons also have a twinbill scheduled for Sunday, at home against the University of New Haven.
