Sucharewicz Drives in 5 as Saint Anselm Tops Bentley, 8-6

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Senior catcher Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody) was four-for-five with five RBI as Saint Anselm College registered an 8-6 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball action Thursday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Bentley, forced to play catch up all afternoon after the Hawks scored once in the second and three times in the third for a 4-0 lead, received a strong effort from sophomore second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy). He raised his team-best batting average to .333 with two doubles, a single, a sacrifice fly and three RBI in five plate appearances.

A two-out walk to freshman left fielder Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) led to Saint Anselm's second inning run. He moved to third on a single to right by junior third baseman Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) and scored on the first of two singles from senior second baseman Steven Panza (Watertown).

In the third, Saint Anselm built on its lead with Sucharewicz delivering an RBI single and scoring on a two-run double by junior Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford).

Bentley, down 6-1 after three-and-a-half, cut the deficit to three with two runs in the fourth. Freshman DH Nathan Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) had an RBI double and scored on a single to center by junior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro/Tyngsboro HS).

The Falcons added two more runs in the fifth inning, with both senior shortstop Ross Curley (Lexington/Lexington HS) and senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) scoring on Gillis' second double of the game and 13th of the season.

After the Hawks picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh, Bentley got back within one in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Gillis.  Sucharewicz restored the two-run lead in the eighth with an RBI double.

Saint Anselm (16-15) finished with 17 hits, with five different players having at least two. Senior center fielder TJ Murphy (Reading) provided three, with two RBI, and sophomore first baseman Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) scored three times during a 2-for-5 afternoon.

Bentley amassed nine hits off nine pitchers, Saint Anselm using a different one in every inning, but did not have a hit after the fifth inning. Lane was the only Falcon, other than Gillis, with more than one as he finished the day 2-for-4.

Freshman righty Derek Amoroso (Newport, Maine), the first of the nine Hawk pitchers, was credited with the victory following a scoreless first inning.

Bentley (8-18) returns to Northeast-10 play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against American International. First pitch is set for 12 noon.
