Curley Leads Bentley’s 17-Hit Attack as Falcons Cool Off Stonehill, 13-8

EASTON, Mass. -- Three hits and four RBI by senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington/ Lexington HS), including his first home run of the season, helped propel Bentley University to a 13-8 win over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Thursday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Bentley, en route to snapping a six-game Stonehill win streak for the second time this spring, pounded out 17 hits, including five in the first inning off Skyhawk lefty Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.), who entered the game with a 3-0 record and a 0.65 ERA.

Curley's three hits were matched by junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) and junior left fielder Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS), and both Korwek and sophomore second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) had three RBI.

Bentley, which had dropped a 1-0 decision to Stonehill on Wednesday in the series opener, jumped on top with four runs in the first and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way. Freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) led off with a double to right, and Curley followed with a two-bagger to left, Keady coming home with the game's first run.

Later in the inning, Korwek had an RBI single, Gillis made it 3-0 with a run-scoring double, and sophomore first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) drew a bases-loaded walk on White's final pitch of the game.

With the score at 5-3, Bentley opened it up with another four-spot in the fifth. Rey had an RBI single and Curley slammed a homer to left, with junior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop/Winthrop HS) and Rey scoring ahead of him.

The Falcons made it 11-4 with two runs in the top of the eighth. Gillis had an RBI single and Eruzione picked up an RBI on a ground out.

Those runs proved to be big as Stonehill (20-8, 5-3 NE-10) came back to score four times in the bottom of the frame. Junior right fielder Kyle Shepard (Boxford) homered to left, his third extra base hit of the day after doubles in the second and fourth, and six of the next seven Skyhawk batters walked, two of those free passes coming with the bases loaded.

Bentley (8-15, 2-6 NE-10) added more insurance in the ninth on a two-run single to right by Korwek.

Everyone in the Falcon lineup had at least one hit, and five had multiple hits. Korwek was 3-for-5, Curley's three hits came in six at bats, and Gillis and  Rey each had two hits.

Sophomore JP Ashline (Clinton/Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) earned the win on the mound. He pitched five solid innings of relief before tiring in the eighth. Overall, he struck out six and was charged with five runs in 5.2 innings, He allowed five hits and issued six walks.

Bentley remains on the road for a Saturday doubleheader at 24-1 Southern Connecticut State, currently the sixth ranked team in Division II.
