Haughn & 2 Relievers Combine on 3-Hitter as Stonehill Blanks Bentley, 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Junior lefty Eric Haughn (Pembroke) and a pair of relievers combined on a three-hit shutout and senior first baseman Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) drove in the game's only run with a sixth-inning triple as Stonehill College edged Bentley University, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Wednesday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Spoiled with the loss was an impressive pitching effort by Bentley freshman righty Nathan Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS). Making his first career start after five relief appearances, he allowed just six hits and the game's only run over six-and-a-third innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Haughn ran his record to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.36 with seven innings of three-hit pitching. He walked two, struck out six and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Junior lefty Michael Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn.) came on for a 1-2-3 eighth and senior righty Brenden Shepard (Boxford) retired the Falcons in order in the ninth for his seventh save and Stonehill's sixth consecutive win.

After Witkowski retired the first two Skyhawks in the sixth, junior center fielder Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) singled to center and stole second. Bruno, Stonehill's clean-up hitter, drove a triple to deep center with White scoring easily on the play.

Junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) had two of Bentley's three hits, including a bloop single to right in the fifth for the Falcons' first hit of the afternoon.

Bentley's best scoring chance of the afternoon, other than a couple warning track fly balls in the spacious ballpark, came with a two-out rally in the seventh. Junior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/ East Bridgewater HS) singled to left, Rey followed with a single to right and junior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro/Tyngsboro HS) drew a walk to load the bases. However, they were all stranded after Haughn escaped with an inning-ending strikeout.

Junior left fielder Steve Popp (Unionville, Conn.) had two hits for Stonehill, which improved to 20-7 overall and 6-2 in the NE-10. Bentley dropped to 7-15 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

The two teams will square off for the fifth time this spring Thursday afternoon at Stonehill's Lou Gorman Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
