5 Hits by Curley Propels Bentley to 15-4 Win over Pace; Hardy & Baggett Homer

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) led a 21-hit attack with a 5-for-5 performance and senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) homered for the fifth time this spring as Bentley University erupted for a 15-4 win over Pace University in non-conference baseball Friday afternoon at Alfond Stadium, on the campus of Rollins College.

Bentley, with its sixth win in its last 10 games, improved to 6-8 on the season. The Falcons' 21 hits were their highest total in exactly a year, since having that many in a win against Saint Anselm.

Down 3-2, the Falcons took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run double to right by Curley. Junior left fielder Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass,/East Bridgewater HS), who was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and junior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS), who had singled as part of a four-hit day, scored on the play.

Bentley broke it open with a five-spot in the fifth, an inning that featured back-to-back homers, off different pitchers, by Hardy and Baggett. Hardy's went to right and came with one aboard, and Baggett's third of the year cleared the left field fence.

The Falcons, who have 52 hits in their last three games, stayed hot at the plate with three more runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Curley, en route to Bentley's first five-hit game since February 2009, doubled twice and finished with three RBI and a run scored.  Korwek, who also had a four-hit game a year ago on March 18, scored three times and drove in one.

Junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) had three hits and two runs scored, and Bentley also received two hits apiece from freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS), sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) and Baggett. Baggett and Keady each scored three times, and Gillis was among five players who drove in at least two.

Reaping the benefits of the prolific offense was sophomore righty John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS), who tossed Bentley's first complete game of 2011. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out seven in his second win of the spring. Pace, 6-6-1, went through six different pitchers.

Bentley closes out the Florida portion of its schedule with a 1 pm Saturday encounter with Stonehill College.
