Bridgeport Punches Across Run in 13th to Edge Bentley, 4-3

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Two infield hits and two walks led to a 13th-inning run and lifted the University of Bridgeport to a 4-3 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Mike Doran (Milford, Conn.) led off the bottom of the fourth extra inning with a single to shortstop. A sacrifice and a ground out moved pinch-runner Brandon Spadolino (Waterbury, Conn.) to third, and after two walks (the second intentional) loaded the bases with two outs, senior right fielder Peter Barrows singled to short, with Spadolino coming in with the winning run.

Both teams had chances to pick up a run in the extra innings, with Bridgeport stranding two in the 10th, leaving runner on third in the 11th and having two on with one out in the 12th. The Falcons left a total of eight on in the 11th through 13th innings, combined, with the bases left full in the 11th and 12th. For the game, Bentley stranded 17 on base.

Bentley, down 3-1 at the time, evened the game with a two-out, two- run rally in the seventh inning. Junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) homered for the second time this spring, freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) singled and stole second, and freshman second baseman Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) doubled Keady home with the equalizer.

Everyone in coach Bob DeFelice's starting lineup had at least one hit with Keady and Brennan each having three at the top of the order. Baggett, who scored twice, had two hits, as did junior Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS), sophomore second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./ Lawrence Academy) and sophomore first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical HS).

Sophomore JP Ashline (Clinton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) took the loss despite 7.2 innings of solid relief. He allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six and issuing four walks.

Bridgeport, now 5-1 on the season, received 6.1 innings of scoreless relief, including two from winner Mike DeLellis (Marlton, N.J.). He took over on the mound in the 12th after catching the first 11 innings and providing his team with two hits and a run.

Bentley, 5-8, is back at its "home-away-from-home", Rollins College, for an 11 am meeting with Pace University.
