McLean Leads Bentley to 7-2 Win over Bridgeport; Hardy Homers for 4th Time

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior pitcher Blaine McLean (Medford, Mass./Cushing Academy) tossed eight innings of two-run ball and Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) and Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic) each drove in a pair as Bentley University defeated the University of Bridgeport 7-2  Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Bentley did most of its damage at the plate in the third inning with four runs. With two runs already across in the inning, Witkowski delivered a bases loaded single down the left field line that scored Rey and junior Greg Baggert (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater), giving Bentley a 4-1 lead.

The Falcons plated two more runs in the fourth inning. With no outs in the inning and Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) on first and Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) on second, Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) bunted to the pitcher Shaun Hancock, whose throwing error allowed Gillis to score. Two batters later, Rey drove in his second run of the game with a sac fly to centerfield, scoring Hardy.

Bentley made it 7-1 in the sixth inning on Hardy's homerun to right field, his fourth of the year and second in as many games.

After allowing a run in the second inning, McLean retired 10 in a row from the third out of the second inning to end of the fifth. He worked his way out of trouble after allowing the first two batters to reach in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh. He finished with four hits allowed, five strikeouts and four walks on 104 pitches, and is now 1-0 on the season.

The Falcons improve 5-6 on the season with the victory (their fifth in seven games), while the Purple Knights drop to 3-1. Bentley is back in action Wednesday against Pace at 5:00 p.m., a game that will also be played at Rollins.
