Bentley Overcomes 4-Run Deficit to Top Stonehill in 10 Innings, 8-5

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Bentley University used a two-out run in the top of the fifth inning to force extra innings and scored three unearned runs in the top of the 10th to record an 8-5 win over Stonehill College in non-conference college baseball Monday afternoon at Alfond Stadium, on the campus of Rollins College.

Senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) led the Falcons with a three-run homer, two singles and two runs scored in the come-from-behind win, and freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./ Norwood HS) scored three times, including the tying run in the ninth.

Bentley, facing a 5-1 deficit, began its comeback with a run in the sixth. Hardy singled up the middle, took second on a ground out, moved to third when junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) singled  to center and scored on a double to left by junior DH Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS).

In the seventh, Hardy slammed his third run of the spring, with Keady and junior second baseman Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) scoring in front of him. Keady opened the inning by beating out a single to short for an infield hit, and Eruzione followed with a walk.

With his team down 5-4, Keady led off the ninth with a walk. One-out later, sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) also walked. Hardy singled to center to load the bases, and with two outs, Baggett drew a four-pitch walk to force in Keady with the tying run.

Keady gave Bentley a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th when he singled up the middle to score junior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro/Tyngsboro HS), who had reached on an error. Another miscue later in the inning scored both Keady and Eruzione.

Freshman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) earned the win, his second of the season, with five innings of relief. He allowed five hits, struck out one and yielded two unearned runs.

Bentley's dozen hits included two apiece by Keady, Eruzione and senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) as well as the three by Hardy.

Bentley, 4-6, will play the University of Bridgeport at Rollins Tuesday at noon.
