Gillis RBI Double Caps Bentley Comeback as Falcons Top Assumption, 7-6

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) lined a game-winning RBI double with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) drove in three runs, as Bentley University rallied from a 6-0 deficit to top Assumption College, 7-6, in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

The victory completed a 3-1 weekend for the Falcons in the Sunshine State, with Bentley improving to 3-5 on the year.

Bentley entered the bottom of the ninth facing a 6-5 deficit. Junior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) led off with a walk, and was sacrificed to second. After a pitching change, freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) grounded to second, but an error allowed Korwek to score the tying run.

A balk moved Keady to second, and Gillis followed with a double to right center, Keady speeding home with the game-winning run.

The comeback started in the third inning, with the Falcons making two walks hurt. Junior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) opened the inning with a walk and scored on Hardy's second homer in as many games.  Junior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) worked a six-pitch walk and came around to score Bentley's third run on a throwing error.

Bentley pulled to within 6-5 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Junior second baseman Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) singled and scored on a double play for the Falcons' fourth run. In the fifth, Gillis led off with a single up the middle, advanced two bases on a wild pitch and scored to make it 6-5 on Hardy's grounder to first.

Assumption (1-2) used six hits, a walk and a hit batter to claim a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore righty Greg Ciavarella (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) settled down after that, allowing only one hit over the next three innings. Freshman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) came on in the sixth and tossed four innings of three-hit scoreless baseball to earn his first collegiate win.

Gillis, 2-for-5, was the only Falcon with more than one hit, and center fielder Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass.) had three for Assumption.

Bentley will be back at Rollins next Sunday to take on Stonehill College at 3 pm.
