Hardy, Baggett Help Bentley Tops Saint Anselm, 8-6

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) homered and junior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) drove in two runs as Bentley University posted an 8-6 non-conference win over Saint Anselm College in college baseball action at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Bentley improved to 2-5 after scoring three times in the top of the first and withstanding several comeback bids by 6-5 Saint Anselm.

In that first, sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) had an RBI double to get the Falcons' on the board early and came around to score the second run on an error. Hardy, who went all the way from home to third on the misplay, scored on a sacrifice fly by Baggett.

Hardy led off the third with a homer to right, and two more runs in the inning made it a 6-2 game. The lead was cut in half in the bottom of that same inning when Saint Anselm first baseman Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) doubled in a run and later scored. In the first, he had hit a two-run homer for the Hawks.

Bentley added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to maintain the lead. Freshman second baseman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) picked up the RBI in the fifth on a ground out, and Baggett had an RBI single in the eighth.

Bentley's 11-hit attack included two apiece by Hardy, sophomore first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) and junior left fielder Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS).

Sophomore JP Ashline (Clinton/Acton-Boxborough Reg. HS) was credited with the win after five innings of three-hit, two-run relief. He walked four, struck out three, and in his first three innings of work, stranded five runners in scoring position. Ashline finished strong, retiring the final seven batters in order.

Junior DH Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) had three hits for Saint Anselm, and Kelly had three RBI and three runs scored.

Bentley will conclude its weekend trip to Florida on Sunday with an 11 am non-conference game against Assumption College at Rollins.
