Bentley Uses Team Effort to Best Concordia (N.Y.), 5-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Five different players scored, the same number recorded an RBI and pitchers John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) and Matt Sherman (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow HS) combined on a five-hitter as Bentley University registered a 5-2 win over Concordia University (N.Y.) in non-conference baseball at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium Friday afternoon.

Yohe, a sophomore, struck out six, including one to end the first with runners on the corners, and allowed one run during his six innings of work. He yielded only four hits and issued three walks. Sherman came on for his school record-tying eighth career save, striking out three in his three innings. He allowed one single and the lone run charged to him was unearned.

Bentley got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) led off with his first career home run clearing the left-center field fence. Senior third baseman Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) and sophomore first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) followed with singles, and after a walk loaded the bases, freshman second baseman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly. Later in the frame, Rey scored on a fielder's choice with junior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel HS) picking up the RBI.

Concordia (0-7) closed the gap to 3-2 with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Sophomore right fielder Luis Gonzalez (Carmel, N.Y.) doubled and scored on a ground out for the first run, and the Clippers used a two-base error, a single and a sac fly for the second.

Bentley (1-4) restored the three run lead with two runs in the eighth. Freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) singled and stole both second and third. Senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) drove him in with a single, and later scored on a Curley single to center.

Sherman closed out the Falcons' first win of 2011 by retiring the side in order in the ninth.

Keady, Baggett and Curley each had two hits for the Falcons, who out-hit their opponents, 8-5.

Bentley will play again at 2:30 this afternoon, against Saint Anselm.
