Kelly Pitches & Bats Saint Anselm Past Bentley, 14-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Sophomore right-hander Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was four-for-six with four RBI at the plate, and also pitched seven quality innings, as Saint Anselm College pounded out 19 hits en route to a 14-3 non-conference win over Bentley University in college baseball at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium Friday afternoon.

Bentley, which had beaten Concordia earlier in the day, carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth. The Hawks capitalized on two Falcon errors in that inning to score five times, all but one unearned, and went on to add three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, and single runs in the eighth and ninth.

After Saint Anselm scored in the top of the second, Bentley struck for two in the bottom half of the same frame. Junior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS), who had homered against Concordia, led off with a double and scored on a one-out two-bagger by sophomore first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School). Later in the inning, a two-out single to left by freshman second baseman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) plated Rey with the go-ahead run.

An RBI double by sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) in the third made it a 3-1 Falcon lead.

The Saint Anselm fifth began with a hit batter and an error on a sacrifice bunt giving the Hawks two on and no out. A single by freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) made it a one-run game, the tying run scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jeff Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) and a double by Kelly drove home Lagasse with what proved to be the winning run.

Kelly's four hits were matched by senior teammate TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.), who scored twice and had one RBI. Eight different Saint Anselm players had one or more RBI and the same number scored at least one run.

Kelly, in his seven innings of work on the mound, allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits while striking out four.

Bentley and Saint Anselm will meet again Saturday morning at 11 am.
