3-Run Homer by Avanzino Propels Rollins to 6-2 Win over Bentley

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Senior first baseman John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y.) slammed a three-run homer to left to cap a four-run seventh and lift Rollins College to a 6-2 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Monday evening at Alfond Stadium.

With the score even at 2-2, Rollins seized control in the bottom of the seventh. Junior center fielder Chris Holloway (Chattanooga, Tenn.) led off with a single to center and was sacrificed to third. Following an intentional walk, junior third baseman Kevin Mager (Middletown, N.J.) broke the tie with an RBI double down the left field line.

Avanzino slammed the next pitch over the left field fence for his second round tripper of the spring and all of a sudden, Bentley found itself on the short end of a 6-2 score.

For the third time in four games, Bentley got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) reached on an infield single, was sacrificed to second and stole third. Sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) picked up the RBI when Keady scored on Gillis' grounder to short.

The 1-0 lead stood until the fourth when an RBI single by junior catcher Sean Reilly (Westwood, Mass.) evened the contest.

Bentley regained a one-run lead in the top of the sixth. Freshman pitcher Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) helped himself with a lead-off double, was advanced to third on a grounder to second by Keady and scored on a single to right by junior second baseman Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS).

Rollins matched the Falcons' run in the bottom of the same inning with Avanzino reaching on an infield single and eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior DH Brian Lattanzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Junior righty Mike Herrmann (St. Louis, Mo.) earned the win for Rollins with seven innings of three-hit pitching. Junior lefty Blaine McLean (Medford, Mass./Cushing Academy) made the start for Bentley and turned in a solid effort, with five hits and one unearned run allowed in four innings.

Rollins (8-2) pounded out a dozen hits en route to its eighth straight win with Avanzino's three matching Bentley's total.

Bentley, 0-4 after dropping four closely-played games in the season-opening series, will be back in the Sunshine State Mar. 4-6 for four games at Rollins against teams from the East Region.
