Holloway Sac Fly in 9th Lifts Rollins Past Bentley, 4-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- A ninth-inning sacrifice fly off the bat of junior center fielder Chris Holloway (Chattanooga, Tenn.) plated junior Sean Reilly (Westwood, Mass.) with the winning run and gave Rollins College a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Bentley University Sunday afternoon in non-conference college baseball action at Alfond Stadium.

Reilly entered the game as a pinch-hitter with one out in the bottom of the ninth and drew a walk. Sophomore Steve Betcherman (Toronto, Ont.) followed with a single to right center, sending Reilly to third. Holloway drove the next pitch to right, deep enough to score Reilly with the winning run.

Bentley had a slim lead for much of the afternoon but saw the Tars tie the game with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth.  Senior first baseman John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y.) reached on an infield single, took second on a throwing error and scored the equalizer on a double to center by junior DH Brian Lattanzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Down 1-0 after a first-inning RBI single by Avanzini, Bentley answered in the top of the second. Sophomore first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) led off with a double to left and scored one out later on a one-out double by second baseman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS), the first career hit and RBI for the freshman.

An RBI single by sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) in the fifth played junior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) with the go-ahead run. An inning later, the Falcon advantage grew to 3-1 when senior 3B Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) scored on a passed ball after having been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The Falcons tried to add to their lead later in the sixth, but Witkowski was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS).

Rollins matched the Falcons' sixth inning run in the bottom of the same inning with a single to short by Lattanzi scoring senior Brunetti (Canfield, Ohio).

Sophomore John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) and junior Matt Sherman (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow HS) shared the pitching duties for Bentley with Yohe tossing four innings and Sherman on the mound for 4.2 Yohe gave up four hits and a run while striking out three, and Sherman's line included six hits, three runs and five strikeouts.

Matt White (Bellingham, Mass.), a senior lefty, earned the win with three innings of two-hit scoreless relief.

The win was the seventh straight for Rollins, which improved to 7-2 on the season, and its third consecutive come-from-behind win over the 0-3 Falcons.

The two teams will conclude their four-game weekend series at 6 pm Monday night.
