Krasne, Howard Team on 3-Hitter as Rollins Holds Off Bentley, 5-4

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Right-handers Will Krasne (Lancaster, Pa.) and Mike Howard (Norwalk, Conn.) combined on a three-hitter as Rollins College held off Bentley University, 5-4, in non-conference college baseball Saturday evening at Alfond Stadium.

It was the sixth straight win for Rollins, which improved to 6-2 on the year. Bentley dropped to 0-2 in its season-opening four-game series with the Tars.

Bentley scored in three different innings and freshman center fielder and lead-off hitter Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS)  was in the middle of each of them with a single and three runs scored.

The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings. In the opening frame, Keady led off the game with a walk and moved to second when sophomore shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) also walked. A ground out advanced both runners and Keady scored on a grounder to second by junior DH Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS).

In the second, Keady reached on a fielder's choice, took third when Gillis doubled to right center and scored for the second time on a grounder to second by senior left fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS).

A sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Nick Adams (Orlando, Fla.) in the bottom of the third got Rollins on the scoreboard. An inning later, the Tars scored twice to take the lead. Junior third baseman Kevin Mager (Middletown, N.J.) led off with a triple, senior first baseman John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y.) followed with a run-scoring double, and Avanzino would later score the go-ahead run on a grounder to second.

Rollins made it a 5-2 game with two more runs in the fifth, an inning that included four singles, two stolen bases, a walk and a wild pitch.

Bentley made it a one-run game again when it scored twice in the seventh. Keady and Gillis opened the inning with singles and moved up 90 feet on a ground-out. Baggett grounded to third with Keady scoring, and Gillis came in on a wild pitch.

Krasne was credited with his second win of the year, despite control issues (5 walks in 5.1 innings). He only allowed one hit and struck out seven before giving way to Howard in the sixth. Howard yielded two hits and retired the final seven Falcon hitters of the game.

Junior Dan Murphy (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade HS) pitched the first four innings for Bentley and gave up seven hits and three runs. Sophomore Greg Ciavarella (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg HS) came on for the next four and yielded five hits and two runs.

The two teams will meet again Sunday at 2 pm and Monday at 6 pm.
