Varsell Repeats as 1st-Team Capital One Academic All-America; Fahey Selected for 3rd Team Honors

Bentley University track standout Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) has been selected to the 2013 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America® Women’s Track and Cross Country first team, becoming only the second athlete in Bentley history to earn first-team Academic All-America recognition twice. Also receiving Academic All-America honors was teammate and classmate Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS), who was voted to the third team by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Bentley University men’s cross country team is in Joplin, Mo. for Saturday morning’s NCAA Division II Championships, as is Falcon sophomore Tara Dooley (Lee/Lee HS) of the women’s team. The championships, which are being hosted by Missouri Southern State University, will be streamed live at www.NCAA.com. The men’s race will get underway at 10:30 CT (11:30 ET), and the women will follow at 11:30 CT (12:30 ET).

A year ago, Bentley University’s Tara Dooley (Lee/Lee HS) caught everyone by surprise when she placed 28th in the New England Women’s Cross Country Championships in what was not only her collegiate debut, but also her first-ever cross country race. Now recognized as one of the region’s best, the sophomore improved on that performance by 22 places Sunday in this year’s championship, finishing sixth overall at Stanley Park with a 5,000-meter time of 17:37.92.

Freshman Samantha Albanese (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield HS) was the number one Bentley University women’s cross country runner to the finish line during Saturday’s Shacklette Invitational at Saint Anselm College. She covered the 5,000-meter course in 21:28.7 to place 20th in her collegiate debut.
