SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Bentley University Falcons finished the International Volleyball Hall of Fame East Region Clash with a 3-1 record after splitting a pair of matches Saturday at American International College's Butova Gymnasium.
The Falcons swept the University of Bridgeport, 3-0, before falling to defending NCAA Division II East Regional champion Daemen College in three sets.
In the 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 win over 1-7 Bridgeport, senior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit/Barnstable HS) led the Falcons with ten kills and a .350 hitting percentage.
Several others contributed to the team's third three-set sweep of the weekend, including sophomore Rachel Vitko (Dover, N.H./Dover HS), grad student Katie Rounds (McFarland, Wis./McFarland HS) and junior Natalie Thom (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS). Vitko provided eight kills off the bench, Thom served three aces and Rounds had three blocks.
Following an ace from junior Ali Stuessi (Fairhaven/Fairhaven HS), Bentley had a 23-21 first-set lead against 5-2 Daemen. However, the Wildcats responded after a timeout to score four straight points for a 25-23 opening win.
There were a total of 17 ties and eight lead changes in the closely contested match. Daemen, which outhit the Falcons .310-.185, took the second 25-19 and the third 25-18.
Junior Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy) hit .333 for the Falcons with a team-high 10 kills.
Bentley, which completed the tournament portion of the schedule at 8-4, will play at Southern Connecticut State Friday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener.
