Bentley Defeats Saint Michael’s 1-0 for 4th Straight Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley won at home 1-0 over Saint Michael's on Tuesday afternoon for its fourth straight victory. Sophomore Sydney O'Connor's (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) scored the goal in the 17th minute and the defense kept its fifth clean sheet of the season.

Bentley took a 1-0 lead on O'Connor's third goal of the season in the 17th minute. Off a punt forward by the Saint Michael's keeper, Gabby Vachon (Pocasset, Mass./Austin Prep) won the ball and passed it forward to Brooke Jones (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) on the edge of the 18-yard box. Jones chipped a pass forward to O'Connor who made a run behind the Saint Michael's defense.

O'Connor took a touch and fired a shot from 12 yards out to the far post for the goal.

Jones, the reigning NE10 Player of the Week, now has a point in four straight matches.

With the 1-0 lead late in the match, the Falcons nearly made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute. A through ball from the midfield and a run by Lily Silva (North Grafton, Mass./Grafton) got her behind the Saint Michael's defense. She dribbled in on goal and took a shot from 15 yards out, only to be denied by Purple Knights goalkeeper Kate Escobedo.

Falcons goalkeeper Claire Ewen (Arlington, Mass./Arlington), the reigning NE10 Goalie of the Week, made five saves on the day to earn her fifth shutout of the season. But she saved her best save for last.

In the 87th minute Saint Michael's Izzy Ruprecht had an open shot from about 10 yards on the near post, but Ewen had it well covered and made a diving save to keep Bentley in front.

The Falcons then saw out the remainder of the match to improve their record to 7-5-3 on the season and 5-4-1 in the NE10.

Their next match is on Saturday at Southern Connecticut at 1:00 PM.
