No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season with 16-9 Road Win Over No. 16 Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Amanda Davis scored a career-high six goals as the No. 18 ranked women's lacrosse team defeated No. 16 Mercy on the road by a 16-9 score in its season opener on Saturday.

Caroline Affolter and Courtney Dermody each had a hat trick for the Falcons. Maeve Johnson and Stephanie McAuliffe had two apiece.

Affolter also helped Bentley dominate the draw controls with a game-high 12, and as a team the Falcons won 23 to just five for the Mavericks.

Goalie Ashlee Wargo turned away 11 shots to earn the win in the cage.

Bentley started fast and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just over four minutes of the first quarter. Johnson had two of the opening goals, and Davis, Affolter and Dermody also scored.

The Mavericks countered with a 3-0 run that extended into the second quarter to cut into Bentley's lead at 5-3.

But that is as close as they would get the rest of the afternoon.

Davis and Dermody scored just 13 seconds apart as the Falcons opened up a 7-3 lead with 10:38 left in the first half.

McAuliffe added a free position goal at the 8:15 mark as Bentley led 8-4 at halftime.

The 3rd quarter was back and forth with Bentley finding the net six times and Mercy four, but it ended with the Falcons in front 14-8.

Davis had three goals in the quarter, Affolter had two and McAuliffe one.

The Falcons then closed out Mercy in the fourth quarter to come home with the victory. Dermody and Davis had goals 48 seconds apart, at 10:55 and 10:07, to take a 16-8 lead.

Bentley will now prepare for its home opener on Thursday against No. 2 ranked West Chester.
