No. 24 Bentley Tops Southern Connecticut 18-9

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No 24 ranked Bentley earned its second victory in a row on Friday by an 18-9 score at Southern Connecticut State.

Junior goalie Maya Rose (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) made 11 saves to earn the win, her 6th of the season. Sophomore Steph McAuliffe (Natick, Mass./Natick) had a game-high nine draw controls and senior Christine Fish (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) pulled down three.

Fish also contributed offensively with two goals and two assists. Three different players had hat tricks, junior Sydney Lynch (Bedford, N.H./Bedford), sophomore Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and graduate student Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic), one game after scoring her 100th career goal.

McCarthy and Johnson both tallied three assists to share the game-high with six points.

Bentley used several big runs throughout the game to build its lead. A 5-0 run in the 1st quarter was the first, over a span of about three minutes as they opened up a 5-1 lead. Johnson had two of her goals during this run.

The Owls closed to within 7-5 at the 5:00 minute mark of the second quarter, but Bentley closed the second half with a 3-0 run. Fish, McCarthy and Johnson all scored on free-position shots for a 10-5 lead at halftime.

Bentley outscored Southern 3-2 in the third quarter to for a 13-7 advantage going into the final 15 minutes. Senior Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) netted her 16th goal of the season 50 seconds into the 4th quarter for a 14-7 lead.

After Southern answered back with a goal, Bentley went on another 3-0 run. McCarthy, Lynch and McAuliffe each scored during the run as they took a 17-8 lead with 9:42 remaining.

Senior Caroline Boudreau (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) closed out the scoring in the final minute with her 11th goal of the season.

The Falcons improved to 6-5 overall and 5-4 NE10 with the win. They will be back in action on Wednesday night to host Adelphi at 7:00 PM in a rematch of last season's NE10 finals.
