No. 14 Bentley Stunned by Franklin Pierce in Final Road Game

RINDGE, N.H. – Senior guard Anna Badosa Soler (Girona, Spain), who only had two points before draining a buzzer-beating three at the end of the first half, scored 18 in the second half to lead Franklin Pierce University to a 60-57 upset of conference-leading Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Wednesday night at the FPU Fieldhouse.

The loss dropped Bentley, number 14 in this week's WBCA Division II coaches poll, back into a tie for first place, with Assumption, with two regular season games to play. The Falcons left the court 21-5 overall and 16-4 NE10. On the other hand, the Ravens improved to 16-9 overall, including 11-9 in conference play, after winning their fifth straight.

Bentley, which was held to only 11 points during the first 16:45 of the second half, regained a 54-53 lead when junior forward Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington HS) made an inside basket with 3:10 to play and two free throws 22 seconds later.

Seven of the game's next eight points went up on the Franklin Pierce side of the scoreboard with the Ravens' 60-55 advantage with two seconds left their biggest of the night. Senior guard Janessa Gonzalez (Meriden, Conn.) made two free throws and Soler sank two for a 57-54 lead with 1:31 to play. After Bentley sophomore post Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) converted one of two at the line, Soler hit two more free throws with 12 seconds left and another from the stripe with :02 remaining.

Franklin Pierce outscored the Falcons 15-6 in the third to cut the Bentley advantage to four, 46-42. The Falcons were just 3 of 16 in the stanza and were single-handedly outscored by six-four FPU senior Colette Mulderig (Scranton, Pa.), who had eight points. DuCharme was the only Bentley player to score in the third as she netted six on three-of-four shooting.

The first half for the Falcons featured the inside/outside work of senior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and the three-point shooting of senior guard Brooke Obar (No. Yarmouth, Maine/Greely HS) with both players scoring a dozen points before the break. Whitmore netted eight points in the paint, buried a three-pointer and sank her only free throw. Obar came off the bench to drain all four of her shots from distance.

Two of Obar's four first-half triples came during a 13-4 run over the final 4:32 of the first quarter, which ended with the visiting Falcons doubling up the Ravens, 20-10.

Bentley led the second quarter by as much as 16, 40-24, following a late 9-2 run. Whitmore had two inside baskets and Obar dropped a three in from the right corner.

DuCharme led the Falcons with 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Whitmore had 12 points and eight boards, and Obar had the four first-half three-balls.

Soler, the reigning NE10 Player of the Week, shot 6-of-9 from the field and 9-of-10 at the line. Mulderig was also a force for the Ravens as she finished with 18 points, five rebounds and five blocks.

It was a tale of two halves for the Falcons, who had 40 points on .571 shooting during the first 20 minutes and 17 on .200 shooting in the second. Bentley sank six of 12 from deep in the first half and made only one of eight after the break.

Franklin Pierce (.367 overall, 3 of 14 from three) won the rebound battle, 36-30, and committed only eight turns, half of Bentley's total. That led to 19 points off.

Bentley will close out the regular season at home with Pace University coming in on Saturday and Southern Connecticut on Tuesday.
