No. 11 Bentley Looks to Avenge Early-Season Loss to AIC

WALTHAM, Mass. – Since mid-February last season, the Bentley University women's basketball team has lost only one regular season conference game. That was against American International College back in November, 66-64 out in Springfield.

The two programs will meet again Wednesday night on Barbara Stevens Court with the Bentley University Falcons, the 11th-ranked team in this week's WBCA Division II coaches poll, alone in first place in the Northeast-10. For those who can't make it to the game, the 5:30 pm game can be viewed live on NE10 NOW.

Bentley, which leads Saint Rose by a half-game in the conference standings, is 14-2 overall, 9-1 in the NE10 and 7-1 at home. Coach C White's team has won six straight, most recently at Southern Connecticut Jan. 16 (66-47) and is 10-1 since the loss to AIC.

AIC will make the trip to Waltham with records of 10-7 overall and 5-6 in the Northeast-10. The Yellow Jackets, after a 8-1 start, are just 2-6 since returning from the holiday break and will be playing their third consecutive road game.

Defensively, the Falcons have been among the best in Division II with the opponents averaging only 52.6 points and shooting just .357, including .219 from three. The latest NCAA statistics have Bentley number two in the division in defending the three and sixth in fewest points allowed. Southern Connecticut became the sixth team to be limited to less than 50 points this season.

Offensively, Bentley ranks in the top ten in three-point accuracy, connecting at a .373 clip. A major reason for that has been the play of freshman guard Niya Morgen (Swampscott/St. Mary's HS), who has made 22 of 41 (.537). The three-time NE10 Rookie of the Week is averaging 9.8 points a game.

Bentley has three players scoring at least ten a game, including junior forward Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington/Wilmington HS). She's had at least 17 in three of her last four games and is producing 10.4 points and 8.2 rebounds a game.

Senior guard Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and graduate guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) are at the top of the list with norms of 12.8 and 11.0, respectively. Whitmore has averaged 16 points in her last four games and has 23 rebounds in the last two. Thompson is six three-pointers away from becoming the sixth Falcon with 200 career, a club that includes Keri Flynn '04, Beth Biasotti '96, Lauren Green 18, Lauren Moore '07 and Courtney Finn '14.

AIC features fifth-year senior wing Briana Lee, a first-team All-CACC selection a year ago at Felician. She has 1,662 career points and is the only NE10 player in the top three in scoring (16.8) and rebounds (9.4).

Other offensive threats include graduate guard Kayla Robinson and freshman guard Ruzgar Christiana Boyle, with averages of 12.4 and 11.4 points, respectively. Boyle leads the team in threes with 36.

AIC has scored less than its season average of 65.1 points in five straight games and gives up 62.0 a game.

In the game back in November, Bentley was up 59-49 with seven minutes to play but was outscored 17-5 the rest of the way, including 4-0 (all free throws) over the final 40 seconds. Top scorers were Lee (19) and Thompson (18).

Bentley is 70-12 all-time against AIC and had won ten straight in the series before the November loss.

Bentley will be back on the road Saturday, a 1:30 pm encounter at the University of New Haven.
