No. 18 Bentley Travels to Southern Connecticut Tuesday Riding 5-Game Win Streak

WALTHAM, Mass. – After playing six of their last seven games on Barbara Stevens Court, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be on the road twice this week, beginning with a Tuesday game at Southern Connecticut State. The 5:30 pm game from the Moore Field House will be streamed live over NE10 NOW.

Bentley will make the trip to New Haven, Conn. tied for first place in the Northeast-10, along with Southern New Hampshire. The Falcons have won five straight by an average of 16.2 points, are listed 18th in the latest WBCA Division II coaches poll and have records of 13-2 overall and 8-1 NE10.

Going back to last season, coach C White's program has won 21 of its last 24 contests.

The most recent victory came Saturday when the frontcourt tandem of Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) combined for 37 points, 20 rebounds and four steals in a 65-52 win over Franklin Pierce.

Whitmore, a senior forward, finished with 19 points and 11 boards, and DuCharme, a six-foot junior, had 18 and nine. Both played less than 30 minutes in a game the Falcons led by 22 after three.

Whitmore and graduate guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) are Bentley's top scorers for the season with averages of 13.3 and 10.9, respectively. Thompson also leads the team in assists (51) and three-pointers (31).

DuCharme, whose season norm is up to 9.9 points, leads the team in rebounds (8.3), defensive rebounds (43), steals (19) and blocks (8).

Freshman guard Niya Morgen (Swampscott/St. Mary's HS), the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week for the third time, scores 9.7 a game off the bench while shooting .511 overall and .500 from three.

As a team, Bentley is fifth in Division II in fewest points allowed and eighth in three-point percentage defense.

Southern Connecticut, 8-7 overall and 5-4 NE10, was minutes away from upending Southern New Hampshire Saturday and extending its win streak to four. The Owls were up 56-51 with three minutes left but were outscored 14-0 the rest of the way.

Southern, 6-2 after a 2-5 start, is in the top three in the conference in assists, bench points, blocks and field goal percentage defense. The Owls average 57.8 points and allow 57.9.

Six-one senior Katie Williamson is the top scorer and rebounder, with averages of 10.8 and 6.7, respectively. She's led the team in scoring in six games and recently had 18 rebounds against St. Michael's. Seven other players score between five and eight points a game.

Bentley had won nine straight against the Owls before dropping a 63-55 decision last January in their last trip to Southern. Whitmore scored 16 and Thomoson added 15 but the Owls used an eight-rebound advantage and superior shooting to prevail.

After facing the Owls, Bentley will prepare for Saturday's encounter at Pace University.
