No. 16 Bentley Looks to Bounce Back with Wednesday Home Game vs. Saint Anselm

WALTHAM, Mass. – Just about a week removed from last Tuesday's two-point loss at American International, the Bentley University women's basketball team will look to get back on track Wednesday when the Falcons host Saint Anselm College on Barbara Stevens Court. The 5:30 pm game will be streamed over the NE10 NOW Digital Network.

Bentley, which slid from eight to 16 in this week's WBCA Division II national rankings, is off to a 4-1 start, including 1-1 in the Northeast-10. The Falcons are 12-2 in their last 14 contests, going back to last February and have wins over two 2023 NCAA regional tournament teams so far this season.

Saint Anselm will come into Wednesday's contest with records of 3-2 overall and 1-1 conference. The Hawks had won three in a row before falling to crosstown rival Southern New Haven last Tuesday.

Graduate guard Ella Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Center Grove HS) will enter the game 15 points away from becoming Bentley's 38th 1,000-point scorer after scoring 18 at AIC. Number six in program history with 174 three-pointers, she averages 14.6 points and is shooting .480 overall and .424 from deep.

Bentley's other double-figure scorers are senior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and freshman guard Niya Morgen (Swampscott/St. Mary's HS). Whitmore averages 12.4 points and Morgen, who has a .588 field goal percentage, has produced 10.2 a game in her first five collegiate contests.

Sophomore post Julia Elie (Rockland/Rockland HS) had her highest scoring game of the season at AIC as she finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. For the season, she's averaging 5.6 points and 4.8 boards.

Bentley has made twice as many triples as its opponents, 40-20, and its .396 accuracy mark ranks in the top 20 nationally. Coach C White's team leads the Northeast-10 in scoring, three-pointers and three-point percentage, and is second in scoring margin, free throw percentage and three-point shooting.

Saint Anselm has three of the Northeast-10's top nine scorers with the trio of sophomore guard Tatum Forbes, fifth-year forward Liv Robles and six-two junior Melanie Hoyt combining for about 47 points a game. That's 68 percent of the Hawks' total.

Forbes, a Hartford transfer, averages 17 points with 26 percent of her scoring coming from the foul line. Robles follows at 15.2 and Hoyt, number two in the NE10 in field goal percentage (.612), is at 14.6.

Bentley and Saint Anselm split the regular season series last year with the Hawks upending the Falcons in their last trip to Waltham, 78-76, despite a career-high 26 points from Whitmore.

All-time, Bentley leads the series 80-16 and had won 30 consecutive home games against Saint Anselm before the loss last January.

On Saturday, the Falcons will be on Long Island for a 12:30 pm game at Adelphi University. The start for that one has been moved an hour earlier from the previously announced time.
