No. 2 Bentley Falls to Assumption in Northeast-10 Semifinals

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Despite two hits from senior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS), Bentley University's bid for the Northeast-10 Conference softball championship came to a halt Friday afternoon when the Falcons fell to sixth-seeded Assumption University, 2-0, in the conference semifinals at Adelphi University's Janet L. Ficke Field.

Bentley, the second seed, dropped to 28-14-1 overall while Assumption improved to 24-17 after recording its third win of the season against the Falcons.

Freshman Kaelin Waldron (Griswold, Conn.) and sophomore Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) combined on the four-hit shutout with Waldron striking out four during the first five innings and Tassone gaining the save with two perfect innings.

All the scoring came in the top of the fifth inning. Junior shortstop Summer Sheerin walked, moved to third on a single by freshman third baseman Emma Bloom (Peabody, Mass.) and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, a two-out single by junior second baseman Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.) drove in Bloom with the second run

Bentley had eight base runners in the game with at least one base runner in each of the first five innings but finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Falcons had two runners on with no outs in the first and one on second with one out in the second.

Junior All-Conference right-handed Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) took the loss after giving up four hits, both runs and three walks in five innings. She finished with three strikeouts. Sophomore Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS) pitched the final two innings and struck out two.

Bentley, the third-ranked team in the latest NCAA Division II East Region, will now turn its sights to Monday morning when the NCAA selection show airs on NCAA.com at 10 am. In all likelihood, the Falcons should receive the first bid in program history.
